Take payment with Tap to Pay

Take card payments in person on your phone, with no separate card reader. The customer taps their card or phone on yours and the money settles through your connected Stripe account.

In a hurry? Quick steps

  1. Connect Stripe first if you have not already
  2. Open the invoice or amount you want to charge
  3. Choose Tap to Pay
  4. Ask the customer to tap their card or phone on the back of your phone

What you need

You need a connected Stripe account, a supported phone with contactless hardware, and the customer in front of you with a contactless card or a phone wallet. Device support varies, so check that your phone is supported.

How it works

Tap to Pay turns your phone into the card terminal. There is no separate reader to buy, carry or charge. The customer taps, the payment is taken, and it settles through Stripe alongside your other card payments.

When to use it

It is built for taking payment on site, for example at the end of a job when the customer wants to pay there and then by card.

Common questions

Do I need a card reader?

No. Tap to Pay uses your phone as the terminal, so there is no separate reader to buy or carry.

What do I need to use it?

A connected Stripe account, a supported contactless phone, and the customer present with a contactless card or phone wallet.

Where does the money go?

Into your connected Stripe account, alongside your other card payments. Standard Stripe processing fees apply.

What plan do I need?

Tap to Pay is available once your Stripe account is connected.
